A 19-year-old man opened fire at a school in the Russian city of Kazan on Tuesday, local media report. The President of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnihanov, has confirmed that at least nine people were killed in the shooting and 21 were injured.

Six of the hospitalized students are in critical condition, according to health authorities in the region. About twenty ambulances have traveled to the scene.

The attacker has been arrested. Minnijánov has commented that it is a 19-year-old boy who had officially registered weapons. He graduated from this same school four years ago, has revealed a source from the administration of the educational institution. Initially, the media reported two attackers, but the Ministry of the Interior of the Russian republic of Tatarstan has denied this information.

A plane with doctors and psychologists has taken off from the Russian capital “to carry out a medical evacuation of the victims. Medical modules equipped to transport the victims to medical institutions in Moscow were installed on board the plane, ”reported the Russian Emergency Ministry.

In a recording captured by witnesses, students can be seen jumping from windows to escape the shooting. According to local media, two students died when they fell into the void from a third floor after jumping out of a window.

A representative of the emergency services has detailed that there was also an explosion in the area. “There was an explosion in the school building, there is intense smoke,” he commented.

Today is a great tragedy for our entire republic, for our country ”, declared Minnijánov. May 12 has been declared a day of mourning in Tatarstan.

Vladimir Putin has sent his condolences to the relatives of the deceased. "The president expressed his deep condolences to the families of the children who were killed by the shooter," Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov told the press.
